According to Shiva Maha Purana, Sati’s father invited Sati for hawan (worship) but Lord Shiva didn’t give permission to Sati. Because Lord Shiva was not allowing Sati to go to Havan. In the end, Sati had to quarrel with Lord Shiva. Then she was able to go to her father’s havan.
Sati’s father strongly condemned Shiva. But Sati herself understood the reason for this insult and threw herself into the same havan. Then Lord Shiva became very angry to see this and after picking up Sati, he started tandava the whole universe. Wait… let me tell you that to do Shiva’s tandava means that the whole world is going to destroy. And to avoid this tandava, Lord Vishnu cut 108 pieces of Sati from his Sudarshan Chakra.
