According to an old story, Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati did penance here for 11 thousand years. During the penance, Mata Parvati’s Chintamani fell into the river, Which Shes Naag got that gems in Hades. Then Mata Naina Devi incarnated to find that Chintamani and went to Sheshnag in hades.
When Mata Naina Devi asked Shesh Nag to give back the gem, Shesh Nag along with Chintamani gave more mani gems to Mata Naina Devi. And since then this place came to be known as Manikaran. And the river is known as the Parwati River.
